Fave 5 Stores for Ethically Made Sweaters

Before we jump right into this massive pile of sweater-y goodness, let’s just talk briefly about ethical fashion. For our purposes right now, “ethical fashion” means clothing that focuses on the humans involved in every part of the process of making a garment. The sad truth is that workers in the fashion industry are grossly mistreated, underpaid, and work in terrible conditions—all so we can buy five of those $5 t-shirts (that we’re going to toss out in less than a year). You see, clothes matter because PEOPLE MAKE THEM. Human hands made that shirt that you are wearing right now.

When you buy something that is “ethically made,” that means that every person has been cared for and provided for from the moment it is designed until the time that it arrives on your doorstep. No one is taken advantage of, no one is underpaid, and quality is king. This is a different movement that is taking place, the slow fashion movement, and it focuses on buying fewer and better-made pieces of clothing. That’s what we believe in here at F+N, and it’s what we want to shine a light on, in our own way. So, when you are looking at these gorgeous sweaters, try to imagine if you would wear that sweater for the next ten years. Would you want to keep it to give to one of your daughters one day? Here, we focus on sharing with you the shops that we absolutely love, have researched, and believe in. These makers focus on quality and long-lasting craftsmanship that goes beyond trends. We want you to love these pieces for years and seasons of life to come. Clothes are meant to be loved, cared for, repaired and adored, and these sweaters are no exception.

1. EVERLANE-the one who is modern, sensible, minimalist, and loves monochrome outfits

Looking for some everyday sweaters that can easily transition from casual to a fancy night out? Then let’s chat Everlane. I’m going to be honest, this is a store that is probably going to show up all over this little blog space. What don’t they do right? Pants, shoes, shirts, sweaters galore. All great quality, and from a company who prides itself on transparency and honesty to its makers and consumers. A company that focus on humans—so refreshing. ANYWAYS. Focus. Sweaters. Everlane has a great range of styles of sweaters AND price points as well, plus free shipping and returns (this matters so much to me—anyone else?). And, yes, I have bought and returned and bought again and returned again at least three or four times in a row with absolutely no hassle. And their customer service is to be rivaled. All around amazing company.

3. HACKWITH DESIGN-the one who loves the mix of classic + unique, structure + flow

You know those designers who create clothing that just instantly makes you feel confident and comfortable in your skin at the same time?  Like you’re wearing a one-of-a-kind piece that you are guaranteed to get complimented on literally every time you step outside (I can attest to this). Every piece in this little shop is made in America by Lisa Hackwith and her team, and every piece is designed with style in mind. Just wearing one of these sweaters makes you feel like you are wearing someone’s craft. Think unique. Think well-made. Think original. Think perfectly oversized. Think worth every forking penny.

4. DOEN-the one who grew up in California or daydreams of its sand and sunshine

This Cali-inspired brand creates sweaters that are equal parts coziness and adventure. You can slip them on and sit by the fire reading for hours, or you can throw one on over a t-shirt and take a brisk walk on the beach with friends. This brand oozes with ease and beauty. Every piece feels like a treasure. (P.S. Moms: they have children’s versions of several of their styles as well! Eeee! Can hardly handle the cuteness.)

5. CHRISTY DAWN-the one who only wants to own two staple sweaters and look breezy and cool the rest of her life

This sweet little brand is mostly known for making fabulous dresses. They just recently released two styles of sweaters, though, which are--not surprisingly--equally fabulous in every way. All their pieces are a beautiful mix of vintage-inspired and modern. If you were going to choose only a couple sweaters to have for the next 10+ years, I’d look no further. These sweaters are well-made and are the kind of style that will go far beyond any “trends” for years to come.
